Crafted by Jack Mincey
Jack made his first Crow call back in September 2005. This high school shop teacher of 23 years got his start after trying to acquire a second crow call that he favored. Which his three year old son took a liking to it as well. So seeking to buy a second, and finding they were no longer sold. He sought a replacement. Being disappointed with the offerings. He took to one of his favorite shop tools, a 40 year old lathe. And the JML Crow calls were born.

OVERVIEW
Once in awhile you get a surprise! An independent call maker creating a "complete" all wood call, even the mouthpiece!
A true rarity these days among the proliferated plastic mouthpieces that have been adopted. Not that there is anything truly wrong with plastic generally. There is just something very special about a well done wood mouthpiece insert which a plastic one could never provide; and the call maker who puts in that extra effort to create it!
It not only compliments the call as a whole. It shows an appreciation for the esthetics and quality of the call itself. The results are worth it. If you think the mouthpiece material is just an extra novelty. Then you seriously need to buy one and experience it for yourself. So treat yourself to this review of a spectacualar Crow Call coming from Jack Mincey, a newcomer in the call making scene. Labeling his calls under his initials JLM. With the goal that he will never take a short cut that will compromise the quality of his calls.

SOUND
When a crow call actually sounds like a crow without even trying, you know the call maker did something very right.
And that's the case with the JLM Crow Call. The sound coming out of this thing is nothing but incredible!
It's one of the most life like Crow calls to ever be produced. And that's just the simple truth.
With virtually little effort on your part you will be producing sounds so realistic you'll make seagulls run like the dickens!
I was literally in surprise when I took it out for a test run. Goodness! I can fool the neighbors with it!
The volume of the call is moderate, so to get some serious distance out of her you'll need to put a bit of breath into it. But the accuracy of the voice reproduction is so well worth that small bit of effort. The raspiness is perfect, the pitch and tone are genuine, it's really a wonderful call.
The JLM Crow Call produces a voice like a young adult crow. Which is very optimal for most uses. And when using it, the call sounds like a crow in the distance further away from your own location rather than close up and in front of you. Which is also a very interesting detail that can be used to your benefit.

CRAFTSMANSHIP
Made from Coco bolo, and finished with a semi gloss friction polish. The body of Jack's Crow Call is very nice indeed.
The wood is flawless, smooth, and completely free of defects. The wood color is rich and dark. Jack went with a tapered design for the body which flares out at the mouth. The mouth edge is uniquely shaped with an angled smooth cut. The inside hollow of the chamber is also finished and polished over an inch in. A lanyard groove is present, deeply set and without blemish. To finish it off, an unfinished Red Cedar mouthpiece is handmade, shaped, and sanded. Then inserted firmly. It's very reminiscent of the Mallard tone Crow Calls. But truly in a class of it's own.
The reed is made from the standard synthetic material used by most call makers, I have to say a true natural reed would have been welcome here. Especially with the effort used to create the cedar mouthpiece. But the sound ofthe call speaks for itself natural reed or not. The whole piece is made to perfection, and while the overall design is quite simple. It was done elegantly. Hand engraved on the body just below the lanyard ring is Jack's initials"JLM" and year of fabrication. Which makes each one a collectors piece.

FEATURES & HANDELING
The call is just the right size to hold. Which makes it effortless to cup the front of it with your hand to manipulate your call sounds if desired. You can get your hands to cover the whole body which makes it very efficient. The distant sound of the calls made from it can also make it easier to fool crows into thinking your not the one making the calls. However this can be a double edged sword in some ways. Where the goal is to get the crows to come closer to you not farther away. But that is just a theory, and I didn't expierience this effect when testing the call. The crows just came flying around to check where I was. The lanyard ring is very deep, so you'll have no issue at all with your lanyard slipping off, even with a sharp snag. The mouthpiece is a real pleasure to use. Lip groves where notched out which provide a landing for your smackers, and a place to bite down if you feel the need. The unfinished smooth sanded cedar provides unparalleled comfort. The mouthpiece is also long, so your mouth doesn't touch the back end of the call, I really appreciate that. Using the call is just fantastic. This call really is one of the great ones. Jack, you did damn good!
